                                PIGS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Voiceless recently launched a follow up Consumer Action Sheet to its 2005
exposé From Paddocks to Prisons. The sheet highlights the institutionalised
suffering of pigs in Australian factory farms and encourages consumers and
businesses to take action to help pigs and piglets. Abbie Cornish, actor
and Voiceless Ambassador endorsed the campaign saying: “I recently saw
a documentary exposing the cruel and inhumane treatment of pigs in
factory farms. It was deeply saddening to watch. I feel it’s important that the
public is aware of the realities of factory farming and I hope that through this
knowledge we can come together to bring about change and eventually
abolish the unnecessary suffering of these sentient beings. Abbie Cornish
Since Voiceless’s report was published, despite a Government review of
the Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals - Pigs and the
endorsement of a Revised Code by the Primary Industries Ministerial
Council, suffering in the industry remains rife. The cruellest practices are
still allowed, including confining female pregnant pigs in stalls so small they
can’t take a step forward or back and mutilations such as cutting off piglets’
tails without pain relief. Read more: Unhappy as a pig out of mud: The
prognosis under Australia's proposed new pig code of practice
