7 THE 2005 VICTORIAN VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR
AWARD!
This year’s award attracted a lot of attention, with votes from around
Victoria and even many from interstate. We are proud to announce that the
winner of the 2005 Victorian Vegetarian Restaurant of the Year Award goes
to…
ENLIGHTENED CUISINE
113 Queensbridge Street
Southbank VIC 3006
Ph: 03 9686 9188
At a gala dinner with live entertainment, an engraved plaque was presented
to Song, Chin and Jack of Enlightened Cuisine by VNV’s President David
Ogilvie and Restaurant Liaison Officer Belinda Stopar. All this was
witnessed by a packed restaurant of 90 plus keen veggos.
Enlightened Cuisine was “established to offer an alternative to other
vegetarian restaurants. Our teachings tell us that dining should be a
pleasurable experience which is more than simply the consumption of
'fuel' for living. Our aim is to create a relaxed environment that is both
inviting and comforting. We believe that, in addition to the quality of our
cuisine, the physical environment should be pleasing and the service
should be polite and helpful. We truly hope that this will be your
experience.”
Enlightened Cuisine caters for special dietary requirements and serves
Chinese vegetarian cuisine.
www.ecuisine.com.au
We’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who took the time to
vote for their favourite restaurant, Belinda Stopar for patiently collating all
the votes, and everyone who was involved with the organisation of the
dinner. The 2006 Veggie Restaurant of the Year Award looks set to be a
big one, who will you be voting for?

VEGAN HEALTH STUDY - CLINICAL SUMMARY
The Vegan Health Study examines vegan health through analysing
questionnaires submitted by over 900 participants who enrolled at the
Vegan Health Study website and includes results of testing of blood and
urine samples of some vegan participants. This summary also incorporates
findings of numerous surveys of the medical literature, and clinical
interviews with many vegans in the past seven years.
Specifically, it addresses three primary issues:
1. The major health advantages associated with vegan diets
2. The major risks for nutritional deficiencies and disease states
associated with vegan diets
3. Recommendations for dietary patterns that minimise risks and optimise
health and function for long-term vegans.

21 (AU) TANGLED TURTLE DIES, AGED 150
A 150-year-old turtle that came to shore on Victoria's south coast cut and
disabled by discarded fishing tackle has died.
Vets and wildlife officers tried desperately to save the two-metre-long,
350kg leatherback - an endangered species - but it died in transit,
suffering cuts to its head, rope burns and necrotic, or gangrenous, muscle.
Healesville Sanctuary vet Kelly O'Sullivan said the rare male turtle came to
shore near Venus Bay, south-east of Melbourne, on Saturday afternoon.
"He was entangled in discarded fishing and shark nets and he had buoys
wrapped around both pectoral fins," Ms O'Sullivan said.
"He also had a long line (attached to him)."
"The injuries were severe."
She said the extent of the injuries resulted from weeks or months of
entanglement.
Ms O'Sullivan said the turtle's death should highlight the dangers of
discarding fishing nets, long lines and craypots in the ocean, and she
urged people to pick up rubbish that could harm marine wildlife.

22 (AU) PORK FARMERS ARE WORRIED ABOUT FILM
CHARLOTTE'S WEB
The pork industry survived the film Babe 10 years ago - but animal rights
activists are ready to cash in on the film adaptation of Charlotte's Web, the
tale of a brave spider's attempts to prevent Wilbur the pig from becoming
Christmas dinner.
It is not scheduled for release until September but animal rights group
Voiceless has already signed up one of the stars, Daisy the 100-kilogram
sow.
Today, Voiceless will release a report into what it says are inhumane
pig-farming practices.
With Daisy by his side, Voiceless founder Brian Sherman, along with the
group's patron, Hugo Weaving, will call on consumers to boycott the
traditional Christmas ham and support free-range pork products.
But Australian Pork Limited spokesman John Lamont said: "Groups such
as these prey upon the ignorance of city kids... (by) filling their heads with
nonsense."

23 (UK) EU CONSIDERS FOOD LABELS TO IMPROVE ANIMAL
WELFARE
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European consumers who prefer meat and dairy
products from humanely treated animals may soon be able to buy farm
produce stamped with an EU "welfare" label.
Noting a "seismic shift" in consumer opinion towards promoting animal
welfare rather than merely preventing cruelty and avoidable suffering, the
European Commission says it is keen to see more farm products obtained
using high welfare standards.
One way to achieve this, it says in a five-year plan to improve treatment of
animals, would be to create a label to help consumers choose between
"minimum" and "higher" welfare standards for the meat, milk or eggs that
they want to buy.
"The establishment of an EU label for animal welfare is an option to be
explored in the near future which could promote products elaborated under
high welfare standards," it said.
"There has been a clear shift of public attitudes towards animals over
recent decades and how animals are considered in society," said the plan,
obtained by Reuters.

24 (UK) CHEAP MEAT PUTTING ANIMALS, HUMANS AT RISK
A letter in the British Medical Journal says cheap meat is hurting both
animals and humans.
The writers argue cheap food, particularly meat, is linked to reduced human
health and reduced farm animal welfare.
...
"Historically, a good public health case existed for reducing the price of
foods, particularly meats," they said. "Vets helped deliver that policy.
Today, veterinarians help farmers control the diseases and other welfare
concerns that intensive farming inadvertently promotes."

25 (US) ANIMAL SCARES CREATE DEMAND FOR VEGETARIAN
INGREDIENTS
Food safety fears have led to the emergence a new market in vegetarian
supplement ingredients, and industry insiders predicting that as many as
half of all ingredients could be non-animal derived in the next ten years.
Scares such as BSE in cattle and avian 'flu in poultry have prompted
consumers and marketers to cast about for supplements containing no
animal derivatives, and that means ingredient companies are having to
reconsider the carriers they use or develop synthetic variants or seek out
vegetarian sources for many of their products.

26 (US) ATKINS NUTRITIONALS OUT OF BANKRUPTCY
NEW YORK – Atkins Nutritionals has emerged from bankruptcy with a
revised business model that hinges less on the popularity of the low-carb
diet espoused by its founder.
The company said it isn't abandoning the legacy of the late diet guru
Dr. Robert C. Atkins, who taught that people should eat foods rich in
protein and limit their intake of carbohydrates.
But with the anti-carb craze waning, the company is no longer publishing
books about the Atkins diet and has jettisoned almost all of a once-broad
product line that included low-carb bread, bagels, pasta, cookies and
cheesecake.
Its new sole focus is selling Atkins Advantage protein bars and shakes,
which have been around since 1997, but have been recently reformulated
to taste better, said chief executive officer Mark S. Rodriguez.
...
Founded in 1989 and based in Ronkonkoma, N.Y., Atkins Nutritionals
spent five months in bankruptcy protection, trimming $300 million in debt.
The company filed papers ending court supervision of the company
Tuesday. It emerges with its debt at $110 million.

27 (US) GREEN DIETS VS. GLOBAL WARMING
Having one's own personal effect on our growing global warming/climate
change crisis is most certainly a multi step program. We often view our
choice in automobile as the most efficacious and obvious first move forward,
but two assistant professors at the University of Chicago say the gas we
want to change may actually be the gastronomic type.
According to a news short titled It's better to green your diet than your car
found at the New Scientist web site the two professors "compared the
amount of fossil fuel needed to cultivate and process various foods,
including running agricultural machinery, providing food for livestock and
irrigating crops". They also counted methane and nitrous oxide produced
by cows, sheep and manure handling. (Note: in the print edition of New
Scientist, Dec 17-23 edition, the article is titled Green your diet before
your car.)
The numbers Gidon Eshel and Pamela Martin present are somewhat
surprising: A typical diet for the United States with about 28% animal
based foods is responsible for almost one and a half tons more of carbon
dioxide than to a purely vegetarian (vegan) diet ... that's per person each
year! In one decade that makes for a difference of 15 tons of climate
altering, global warming gasses for just one person.

28 (UK) EATING VEG 'CUTS BLOOD PRESSURE'
A vegetable-rich diet can help to reduce blood pressure, researchers say.
A team led by Imperial College London, which studied 4,680 people aged
40-59, said it was not clear why eating more vegetable protein had such
an effect.
But amino acids - the building blocks of protein - or vegetable components,
like magnesium, may be key, they said.
However, they found no strong evidence that high meat consumption is
linked to high blood pressure. The study features in Archives of Internal
Medicine.
"Understanding more about these vegetarian proteins could help guide us
in how to prevent or treat heart and circulatory disease and allow us to
lead an appropriate healthy lifestyle."

29 (UK) VEGETARIAN PROTEIN DIET CUTS HEALTH RISK
A high protein diet can help reduce blood pressure - but only if it comes
from vegetables, researchers reported recently.
The findings may explain why some research has suggested that a high
protein diet can benefit blood pressure, according to researcher Dr Paul
Elliott, of Imperial College, London, UK.
The researchers studied information about 4,680 people from four
countries.
Volunteers were studied for three to six weeks, their blood pressure
measured and details of their diet recorded.
The findings, reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine, show no link
between animal protein and blood pressure levels.
But consuming vegetable protein, such as soy, led to a reduction in blood
pressure.
The researchers believe that amino acids - the building blocks of life - may
play a role as they differ between animal and vegetable protein.
High blood pressure is a symptomless condition but creates a high risk of
stroke and heart disease.
Dr Elliott and his colleagues write: "Our results are consistent with current
recommendations that a diet high in vegetable products be part of a healthy
lifestyle for prevention of high blood pressure and related chronic diseases."
