Banrock Station

The following is an email from a visitor to this website (September 2006):
"I noticed that you don't show Banrock Station wines on your list and wanted to provide you with my feedback. I have been buying Banrock Station Shiraz as I found it listed as a vegan wine on another website. I am HUGELY disappointed since going onto the Banrock website today (Canadian version). They show support for a Canadian salmon project in Ontario in conjunction with a FISHING AND HUNTING ASSOCIATION. They also have a contest where the grand prize is a trip to a fishing lodge. As a vegan it's not just about what's in the wine, it's about the fact that Banrock Station appears to think the only reason to protect a species is so that it's available to fisher/hunters (and don't they usually drink beer, anyway?). I will not buy Banrock Station wine again and am suggesting to all other vegans that they also avoid it."

“All of our vineyards are run using biodynamic practices and have been certified organic for over 10 years. Our winery and wines have been certified organic since our first vintage in 2002. All our Kalleske wines are unfined and unfiltered and use no animal or animal derived products in their production making them suitable for vegans. They pretty much just contain grapes with the minimum amount of sulphur added, therefore they are not preservative free. However a number of people that are prone to allergic reactions to wines have found ours to cause no adverse reactions."

"As from 1 January 2003 all LNA products are brewed and packaged without the use of any animal products. Isinglass was used until December 2002 and now no longer used. The apple juice in Ted Cider is the only one that has traces of milk. It has been in contact with Caseinate, a milk derived product used for fining (clarifying) the juice early in the process before we receive it. So this may rule it out of being suitable for vegans."
